Lennons and Byrnes in Tinnecarrig, second set

Today, a treasure trove of Lennons and Byrnes, along with a Flood, and a Moore! These are all from prints. Now that I have an idea of what several individuals look like, it’s easier to identify them. When we were at Tinnecarrig last summer, I told JL I’d never seen a picture of Thomas and Mary (Byrne) Lennon of Tinnecarrig — his grandparents and my great-grandparents. He kindly shared a digital copy of a photo he has. Today I discovered I have some photos of them, too!

I’ve started putting maiden names into parentheses, for clarity. I’ll go back and change past posts for consistency.

Again, any help in identifying unknown individuals is greatly appreciated.

Enjoy,

Sioban

  1. Sioban delighted you sharing all the old photos with us. Lovely to see a few of our grandparents and father as a young man.

  2. Mary,

This is wonderful, thank you! Being a work-in-progress, I’m still figuring out how to include personal recollections. This time, I’ve put it below the photo, rather than in the caption. What a lovely memory about your mother writing to her sister every week. I can picture her in the kitchen at Tinnecarrig, doing just that.

And, I didn’t know how you and MMcG knew each other! Probably, I forgot. Thank you for filling in the details.

    Love,

  3. Hi Siobhan,

Thank you for uploading this set of photographs. My grandfather, Michael Byrne (1903-85), Bridie’s first cousin and nephew of Gerald (1871-1958), appears in photos 13 and 14 from the top.

Bridie identified her aunts Hannah (1868-1953) and Bridget (1875-1958) who appear in photos 4, 13 and 14. Hannah (wearing glasses) appears on the left in each photo, and Bridget (hair parted in centre) in the centre or on the right. All three photos were taken at Tinnecarrig in 1939.

    Best regards,

  4. Hi Siobhan,

My earlier comment related to the photos you posted on 26 March 2015. You also posted several photos on March 7 (photos 4, 5 and 6 from the top of the post) where an elderly man standing next to Minnie Byrne has been identified as Gerald Byrne. That man was, in fact, John Merrigan who worked on the farm at Tinnecarrig for many years. Bridie believes that all three photos were probably taken around 1960 after Gerald had died.

Photo 1 of your March 7 post was taken in 1939 and shows Hannah Byrne sitting with Mae (Morrissey) on her lap and Bridie leaning against Hannah’s left leg. Margaret Lennon is standing on the right next to Minnie.

    • Hello Robert,

I haven’t been working on the blog for quite some time due to various family emergencies on both my and my husband’s sides. Hence I am replying to you a full year later! My apologies. I’m hoping I will have more time to continue working on the blog this summer. Meanwhile, thank you so much for the excellent information!

  5. Hi Siobhan,

Sorry to hear about the emergencies. I hope they have been resolved.

You may be interested to know that the Irish Civil Registration Service recently uploaded its records for births (1864-1918), marriages (1864-1943) and deaths (1878-1968) on the website http://www.irishgenealogy.ie under the Civil Records tab. Access is free.

Separately, Irish church records (baptisms and marriages) have been available since 2016 in microfilm format on the National Library of Ireland (NLI) website at registers.nli.ie. The townland of Tinnecarrig is in the parish of Borris, Co. Carlow in the diocese of Kildare and Leighlin. The records for baptisms in Borris are available from 1782 to 1876, and marriages, from 1782 to 1881. Records for most other parishes begin around 1820-1830. Reading microfilms of handwritten records is laborious. Fortunately, the website Findmypast.co.uk (access free) includes a search feature of the NLI records.

Another useful resource is the National Archives of Ireland website (www.census.nationalarchives.ie)where the complete 1901 and 1911 censuses are available. As you may know, nearly all the data from previous censuses (1821 to 1891) were destroyed during the Irish Civil War. Although the census data is generally reliable, I noticed many discrepancies between ages given to the census officials and ages according to baptismal records. Curiously, where discrepancies occurred for my own ancestors, the census data almost always seemed to credit them with being younger, in some cases by five years or more, than their baptismal records indicated.

It also helps to have a list of the townlands in each county, particularly when searching the NLI parish records.. The relevant website for County Carlow is http://www.townlands.ie/carlow.

Here is some information about the Byrnes and Lennons from Tinnecarrig that you may find useful:
    BYRNES:
Generation 1: Michael Byrne of Tinnecarrig married Elinore Corcoran. They had six children: Anne (b. 1801), Garret (1802-97), Patrick (1805-85), Catherine (b. 1808), Judy (b. 1810), James (b. 1813).

Generation 2.1: Garret Byrne (1802-97) of Tinnecarrig married Mary Keating (1807- ca.1840) of Ballyhegan, St. Mullins, Co. Carlow. They had four children: Michael (1830-82), Patrick (b. 1833), James (b. 1835), Catherine (b. 1837).

Generation 2.2: Garret Byrne (1802-97) of Tinnecarrig married again after his first wife died. His second wife was Mary “Hannah” Murphy. They had four children: Thomas (b. 1843), John (b. 1845, died in infancy), Gerald (1847-1937), John (b. 1849)

Generation 3: Michael Byrne (1830-82) of Tinnecarrig married Bridget Kavanagh (1835-77) of Ballycrinnigan, St. Mullins, Co. Carlow. They had nine children: Mary (b. 1857), Gerald (b. 1859, died in infancy), Patrick (b. 1860), Mary (b. 1861), James (1863-1942), Catherine (b. 1865), Judith “Hannah” (1868-1953), Gerald (1871-1958), John (b. 1873), Bridget (1875-1958)

Generation 4: Gerry Byrne (1871-1958) of Tinnecarrig married Mary “Minnie” Lennon (1899-96) of Tinnecarrig. They had three children: Bridie (b. 1935), Mae (b. 1937) and Michael (1940-2019). Bridie live in Gowran, Co. Kilkenny. Mae married Michael Morrissey (1932-93) of St. Mullins, Co. Carlow and lives in New York. They had five children: Marie, Brid, Siobhan, Michael & Raymond. Mae lives in New York. Michael married Kathleen O’Neill. They had four children–Miriam, Catriona, Gerry & Michael–and lived in Lacken, New Ross, Co. Wexford.

    LENNONS:
Here I have looked only at the maternal relations of Minne Lennon (1899-1996). This information is somewhat speculative since I have not been able to find baptismal and marriage records for Michael Byrne (1836-1918).

Generation 1: Patrick Byrne (1805-85, see also above) married Ellen Galivan of The Rower, Co. Kilkenny. They had three children: Ellen (b. 1834), Michael (1836-1918), Mary (b. 1841)

Generation 2: Michael Byrne (1836-1918) married [Judith Murphy?]. They had [?] children, including Mary (1868-1948)

Generation 3. Mary Byrne (1868-1948) of Tinnecarrig married Thomas Lennon (1865-1950) of Newtown, St. Mullins, Co. Carlow on 17 August 1897. They had four children: Thomas (b. 1898), Mary “Minnie” (1899-1996), James (b. 1900), Julia (b. 1908).

I would be happy to discuss this further by private e-mail if you wish.

    Kind regards,
    Robert

  6. Hi Sioban,

A quick addendum to my last e-mail in relation to Minnie Lennon Byrne’s maternal ancestors:

Generation 1: Michael Byrne of Tinnecarrig married Elinore “Nelly” Corcoran. They had six children: Anne (b. 1801), Garret (1802-97), Patrick (1805-85), Catherine (b. 1808), Judy (b. 1810), James (b. 1813). The farm in Tinnecarrig was split between Garret and Patrick.

Generation 2: Patrick Byrne (1805-85) of Tinnecarrig married Ellen Galivan of The Rower, Co. Kilkenny. They had three children: Ellen (b. 1834), Michael (1836-1918), Mary (b. 1841).

Generation 3: Michael Byrne (1836-1918) of Tinnecarrig married Judith Murphy (1840-1905). They had eight children: Patrick (b. 1864, probably died in infancy), James (b. 1866), Mary (1868-1948), Ellen (b. 1870), Catherine (b. 1871), Johanna (b. 1873), Bridget (b. 1875), Patrick (b. 1877). Note: Judith also appears in civil records as Judy, Johanna and Julia.

Generation 4: Mary Byrne (1868-1948) of Tinnecarrig married Thomas Lennon (1866-1950) of Newtown, St. Mullins, Co. Carlow. They lived in Tinnecarrig and had four children: Thomas (b. 1898), Minnie (1899-1996), James (b. 1900), Julia (b. 1908).

    • Hello Mary!

Thank you so much for your comment! Yes, I am sure your Sonny Lennon is the same Sonny — Tinnecarrig cinches it. My grandmother was Sonny’s youngest sister, Julia Lennon Moore. There were four children: Thomas (Sonny), Mary (Minnie), James (Jimmy) and Julia. I was unaware of the coincidence that the two siblings who emigrated to and lived the rest of their lives in NYC had both married Moores!

I only just found your comment this weekend when showing the blog to my cousin, Breid — coincidentally a granddaughter of Mary “Minnie” Lennon Byrne, younger sister of Sonny.

I would love to see your photos. This blog has yielded so much family history and filled in many missing names. I hope to have the time at some point to really dig into it, meanwhile, I work on it sporadically.

      Best,

      • Hi Sioban, How wonderful to hear from you.

Attached find some photographs. Picture one is of Thomas “Sonny” Moore wedding picture. It is the picture were Tommy is sitting, my grand aunt, Margaret Moore Lennon, Cannonswood, Cullohill, Portlaoise, is standing by him (she was my grandfathers half and youngest sister as his father died when only in his early forties) The other people in the picture are, bridesmaid Ellen Cummins, Lowhill, Co. Kilkenny, my grandmother and the other gentleman is my grandmothers cousin Mr John Lawlor. Date unknow.

Pitcutre two: we know only one person in this picture and that is Margaret Moore Lennon. Hopefully you will be able to fill in who all the other people are. Would be most grateful. Date unknown.

Tomas and Margaret did come back to Kilkenny for a time but it did not work out and they returned to New York. Margaret came first, ran a boarding house at 88 John street, Kilkenny. Tommy came later.

Maybe you would know what relation a Paddy Lennon who came from Tinnecarrig and married into Clashwilliam, Gowran was to Thomas “Sonny” Lennon. (We live in Clashwilliam). Were they first cousins, since Tommy has no brother Paddy?

Really looking forward to hearing from you.

      • Hello Mary,

Great stuff! Unfortunately, I cannot see your images; I think the blog didn’t allow them to upload. I can send you a DropBox link if you’d like, where you upload images to, or you can email them to me at negposproj@icloud.com. Whatever is easiest.

Meanwhile, I don’t know about Clashwilliam connection, but can put your question out there to the rest.

        Cheers,

We would dearly like to show you the pictures to confirm same. I very much look forward to hearing from you. . • Hello Margaret,

Thank you so much for writing!

Several of my cousins follow this blog and are nieces, nephews, or grandchildren of Minnie Lennon Byrne. Some live in Ireland, some in the USA. I Minnie’s grand niece, and live in the USA, so don’t have as much information as any of them might. I hope one of them can weigh in with any information you might be looking for.

I am just about wrapped up cataloging all the images and will be posting more, soon.

So nice to hear from you.

  10. Hi Sioban,

As Miriam has already confirmed, Patrick Lennon (b. 1904) of Clashwilliam, Gowran, Co. Kilkenny was a first cousin of Thomas Lennon (b. 1898), Minnie Lennon Byrne (1899-1996), Jimmy Lennon (b. 1900) and Julia Lennon Moore (b. 1908) of Newtown, St. Mullins, Co. Carlow. Patrick’s grandchildren, Margaret, Pat, Tom, Geraldine, Joseph and Brendan, attended Gowran National School around the same time as I did from 1975-8. Pat and John Holden of Clashwilliam, possibly related to Mary MH, were a year or two ahead of me. I left Ireland 35 years ago. As far as I know, Tom Lennon (c. 1934), father of Margaret, Pat, Tom etc., was still living in Clashwilliam in 2016, when Brendan died.

Margaret Delaney (1906-1957), Patrick’s wife, was probably a third cousin of my grandfather, Michael Byrne (1903-85) of Lower Grange, Gowran, In addition, Gerry Byrne (1871-1958) of Tinnecarrig, Ballymurphy, Co. Carlow was my grandfather’s uncle.

My notes below on the history of the Lennons of Newtown from ca. 1820-1920 may be of interest to others. The data are taken from the NLI parish register for St. Mullins (baptisms and marriages from 1820-80), the Irish Civil Records (births from 1864-1921, marriages from 1864-1945, deaths from 1870-1972) and the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses, all of which are available online.

    Regards,
    Robert

    • Robert, this is excellent information. Most of which I had, but you have stated it very clearly indeed. I am married to Jimmy Holden, Clashwilliam and my great Aunt Mary Moore was married to Tommy “Sonny” Lennon in New York. Her daughter Mary whom I still correspond with is living in Texas. We are in regular contact with Pat Lennon, Clashwilliam, Tom’s son. Jimmy and he are very good friend’s. I will pass on to Pat all the information in your email.

  11. Hi Mary,

Thank you. Geraldine Lennon of Clashwilliam was in my class at Gowran N.S. Tom L was a year ahead of me, and Pat L, two or three years ahead. Your husband Jimmy, who I understand is older than his brothers Pat H and John H, had probably already left Gowran N.S. when I started there in April 1975.

By the way, a few of the details in my previous note are wrong. As far as I know, Jimmy Lennon (b. Dec 1900) of Tinnecarrig, Ballymurphy married Annie Cummins (b. Sep 1918) of Ballygub, Inisitioge in 1951 (not 1936). I never met Jimmy’s family, but knew about them through Bridie Byrne, Jimmy’s niece, who now lives in Gowran.

    Regards,
    Robert

  13. Hello I’m trying to find out some details about my maternal great grandmother Catherine (Kate) Stapleton nee Lennon. I am trying to complete a part of the Stapleton Family tree for some American relatives but am having no luck finding out who Kate’s parents were. My mum’s youngest sister Lizzie Gaul passed away in 2021 and there is a condolence message from Mary Lennon of Tinnecarrig with reference to Lizzie & her brother Andy visiting them & their parents so I am guessing I am in the right region of Carlow for Kate. Kate’s DOB c1860’s and DOD 1934. I do remember my mum bringing me along to visit a cousin in the late 1980s, who i seem to remember was called Cummins who had married into the Lennon family. Any help you can give me about Kate would be much appreciated.

    • June 20th 1889. A Catherine Lannen from Knockeen, Co Carlow married a Michael Stapelton, Ballymartin (most likely County Kilkenny, Ballymartin is just above Castlecomer) The marriage was solemnized in the Roman Catholic Church at Glynn in the registrar district of St. Mullins, Co. Carlow. Catherine’s father, a farmer, name was Thomas. Michael Stapelton’s father’s name was John. I think this could be your Catherine Lannen. I have a cop y of the marriage certificate. I can send it on to you if you get in contact with me. Mary MH
