Mystery People

These images are from NYC and possibly Ireland, c. 1920’s – 1950’s, containing people neither Conor nor I know. I’d guess that half the images we have in both negative and positive form fall into this category. We could really use help identifying them. Please use the comments below to tell me if you know – or even think you know – who someone is.

Meanwhile I’m continuing to organize and catalog the printed images we have. Some have captions written on the back, so we might be able to suss out who some people are that way. On the other hand, some captions say things like “Myself, 1927”. Presumably those are prints that were sent via mail.

Thanks again to all of you who have already contributed names, places and dates.

Best,

Sioban

Possibly Thomas “Sonny” Lennon, a very blurry Mary Moore FitzGerald, Julia Lennon Moore, Unknown. 1936. Conor pointed out that this is most likely our mother, Mary Moore FitzGerald’s first birthday party — see the cake with the single candle and the little dog toy? also, if you look, that is our grandfather, Andrew C. Moore in the mirror, taking the picture! Image 4.2_N_BW_FFT.

Possibly Thomas “Sonny” Lennon, Unknown, Mary Moore FitzGerald, Andrew C. Moore, and in the mirror, taking the picture, Julia Lennon Moore. We are assuming this is Mary Moore FitzGerald’s first birthday, because of the cake with the single candle and the stuffed dog toy on the table. NYC, possibly the apartment on 101st Street, 1936. Many many thanks to my cousin, JL of Tinnecarrig for this identification: Thomas Lennon, Tinnecarrig, Borris, Co. Carlow. Born in Newtown Graiguenamanagh Co. Kilkenny, or possibly Newtown Borris Co. Carlow — the Lennons came from there. He married into Tinnecarrig; his wife was Mary Lennon. Her surname before she married was Byrne. Her sister lived down the lane where MLM, BB nd MB were born — it was all one farm at one time, but was divided. Thomas and Mary Byrne Lennon had four children Thomas “Sonny” Lennon, who emigrated to NYC, Mary Eileen “Minnie” Lennon Byrne, of Tinnecarrig, my father James “Jimmy” Lennon, of Tinnecarrig, and Julia Lennon, who emigrated to NYC and married Andrew C. Moore. My grandfather was born 7th September 1866. He died 21st June 1948 (I think that is the date on the family gravestone in Ballymurphy Cemetery, Borris, Co. Carlow). You’ll need to double check the details with other sources. Image 6.7_N_BW_FFT

We suspect this is a Moore, possibly James, Andrew C. Moore’s brother, at Poet’s Walk, aka the Literary Walk. These are four of these pedestals still standing, though they have been moved due to major renovations. To see Conor with on of them in March, 2015, click here. Image 1.2_N_BW_FFT
